A violin labeled 'Wilhelm Duerer' made in 1911 - $2,000
This firm made a range of instruments from basic student models up to very fancily carved violins intended for professional use. The sound of this violin is very direct and carries well, without undue harshness in the upper register. Workmanship is very clean, and the wood selection is close to idea. Unfortunately the original red colour in the varnish was not light-fast, and this has faded due to strong light exposure to an even amber-brown, with only traces of the red hidden in the corners. The edge work is quite strikingly delicate, with considerable skill needed to execute inlay so neatly, so close to the outer edge. There is no significant damage, only a few minor scuffs as one might expect in a century of use. A very lightly made fiddle, easy to play.
