This violin dates to around 1900, following someone's idea of what a Maggini ought to look like including doubled purfling around the edges and an extra turn in the scroll. The inlay and carving are very neatly done as is the overall work, inside and out. I've had it apart to repair one long crack in the lower belly and replace the bottom block, both of which split due to low winter humidity. It has been made stable and strong, without losing some very good openness of tone. The varnish was deliberately antiqued by the maker using some dents and varnish rubbing/gradient techniques. A good sounding violin with a generous voice.. |
