A boldly made old German violin labelled 'Sanctus Seraphin' - $2,500

belly back

The one piece, boldly flamed, roundly carved back, confident edgework, and overall rather large proportions show that this is not a timid instrument. The sound is every bit a match to the appearance, with plenty of warm volume to carry into a large space. With no history of mechanical problems, this violin is exceptionally stable. Why it should have been labelled with the name Sanctus Seraphin is a small mystery, as the model is not like that of any Seraphin I've yet seen. The f-holes are no doubt inspired by the work of Guarneri. A lovely violin nonetheless, the amber-orange varnish is largely intact.
