A lovely German violin, circa 1900
This is an exceptionally beautiful violin with almost no damage from its century or so of life. There is a small shrinkage crack alongside the lower saddle, but even this is modest considering the age. The maker apparently 'antiqued' the varnish by removing much of it after completion, rendering a well-worn appearance which is quite appealing. The one-piece maple back is extraordinary in the quality and beauty of the wood, and the carving and inlay are well matched in the skill of their execution. This violin has a broad, open sound, very powerful.
