An old German violin

belly back

This German violin, labelled ‘Antonius Stradivarius Cremonensis faciebat anno 1721’ was probably made between 1880 and 1900. It has suffered no serious injuries, but has twice been dismantled for minor internal work. The woods used are of good acoustical quality, the spruce of the belly especially so. Varnish is thin and of a brown-amber hue, mostly intact. Some ‘antiquing’ was apparently rendered by the maker. The sound is quite generous and even with good projection and response.
