Consignment sale of old French doublebass

This bass was likely made prior to the mid-1800's in France. While there is no label, was none when the current owner bought it from a Scottish performer in the late 1960's - the bass played in a dance band in Scotland for many years before that - the design and style of work are strongly indicative of French origin. A complete restoration several years ago in Victoria has brought the bass into healthy condition again. I have recently made a new bridge for it and otherwise adjusted the sound, which is now rather powerful under the bow. A very decent orchestral bass. The pizz sound is moderately loud, and with some changes in the setup could be more suitable for jazz. Rich red-brown varnish has seen some over-varnishing, but considerably original varnish remains. The French tuners work well.

Asking $28,000. Call or text to 604 253 2503 or email gerard@luthier.ca for an appointment to try this bass.
